Dubai Airports will boost the capacity of Dubai International (DXB) from 90 to 118 million passengers by 2023 without building any major new infrastructure.
Under a programme called DXB Plus, the airport will add ten new A380 contact stands at Concourse C to support Emirates growing fleet of superjumbos and will also enhance services with smart technology.
Concourse C became a part of the Terminal 3 complex used exclusively by Emirates and its partner Qantas following the opening in February of the $1.2bn Concourse D for international airlines.
The building, which currently has just three A380 contact stands, will also undergo interior refurbishment as part of the makeover, including the re-design and enhancement of gate hold rooms, increase of dedicated airline lounge space, and enhancements to improve the overall customer experience, Dubai Airports said.
Just over 78 million passengers passed through Dubai International in 2015 and traffic for the first seven months of 2016 was up by 7 percent on the previous year.
Bryan Thompson, Senior Vice President of Development at Dubai Airports said: Considering the traffic growth at Dubai International and the central role the airport will continue to play for the aviation sector as well as Dubais economy over the next 10 years, it is vital that we provide additional capacity while enhancing our customer service. We believe this first project under DXB Plus will deliver on both fronts.
