King Salman Stadium will be Saudi Arabia’s largest and a global sports landmark
The King Salman Stadium and Masterplan, designed by Populous, is set to become Saudi Arabia’s largest stadium and a global sports landmark, with completion scheduled for late 2029. Located in northern Riyadh near King Abdulaziz Park, the development will serve as the home of the Saudi national football team and host national and international sporting and entertainment events. With a seating capacity of over 92,000, the stadium features a Royal Box, VIP lounges, skyboxes, and panoramic rooftop gardens.
Inspired by Saudi Arabia’s natural landscape, the design reflects the concept of growth, symbolizing the nation’s commitment to sports development. The masterplan incorporates various sports facilities, including an athletics stadium, football training fields, fan zones, an aquatics center, and multi-purpose sports halls. Community features like a sports park and a 9-kilometer track connected to King Abdulaziz Park aim to promote grassroots sports participation.
The masterplan integrates seamlessly with King Abdulaziz Park, showcasing sustainable practices such as green roofs and walls that link the stadium to the surrounding environment. Designed to meet FIFA standards, the compact seating bowl ensures an intimate spectator experience while accommodating Royals, VVIPs, VIPs, and general admission spectators. Flexible spaces allow the venue to host a wide variety of events.
The project reflects Populous’ 40 years of expertise in stadium design, blending advanced infrastructure with the natural environment. Vibrant walkways provide dynamic spaces for visitors on non-matchdays, while the stadium itself anchors Saudi Arabia’s growing sports ecosystem, complementing venues like Prince Mohammed bin Salman Stadium and King Fahad International Stadium. With cutting-edge facilities and sustainable design, the King Salman Stadium and Masterplan exemplifies Riyadh’s vision of creating a world-class destination for sports and community engagement.
