The memorandum of understanding (MoU) strengthens the existing relationship between Dubai Police and General Motors (GM), enabling them to collaborate seamlessly as they collectively work towards enhancing road safety in the UAE through innovative technology solutions.
Signed by Major General Engineer Kamel Butti Al-Suwaidi, Director General of Operations at Dubai Police and Gary West, Managing Director, OnStar and Future Mobility General Motors Africa and Middle East, the MoU will focus on developing road safety and traffic management tools.
The signing of the MoU is the next step towards launching OnStar, GM’s in-vehicle safety and security technology, in the UAE, by allowing Dubai Police and OnStar to work together to support drivers when the unexpected happens.
When an OnStar equipped GM vehicle gets involved in an accident, the vehicle can automatically alert OnStar Advisors who will determine the severity of the accident and then transfer the information to the Operations Room at Dubai Police, allowing emergency responders to be informed on the specifics of the incident and act effectively, before even arriving onsite.
Commenting on the MoU signing, Major General Engineer Kamel Al Suwaidi said: “Dubai Police is committed to building and strengthening its co-operation with partners to jointly develop technology that enhance road safety.
“This MoU is an example of how Dubai Police is always working in the best interest of the community by delivering against Dubai Government’s overarching strategy to innovatively improve safety and security on the roads.”
The MoU also outlines that Dubai Police and GM will continue to work together to support and promote road safety, will collaborate with the aim to further develop the partnership, keeping the safety of Dubai’s drivers front-of-mind. Finally, the MoU also allows for the opportunity of testing innovative technology with Dubai Police.
Luay Al Shurafa, President and Managing Director of General Motors Africa and Middle East said, “We are honored to sign the MoU with Dubai Police, marking a milestone in connectivity and in-vehicle safety and security services in the Middle East.
“General Motors has been in the region for over 90 years, working closely with the visionary leadership to build smart, sustainable, and advanced cities. Our vision of a future with Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions and Zero Congestion is perfectly aligned with this ambition and we are proud to be bold and supportive partners with the UAE government and the wider region, working towards a cleaner, brighter tomorrow.”
