Dubai plans to make buildings and transportation infrastructure accessible for people with disabilities by 2020.
Details were revealed by Dubai Executive Council at the Dubai International Government Achievements Exhibition on Wednesday.
Under the initiative all new buildings and facilities will have to comply with new standards while existing buildings and facilities will need to be retrofitted wherever possible.
The project, titled ‘Accessible Environments for People with Disability based on Universal Design’, is in line with the wider ‘My Community – A City for Everyone’ initiative to transform Dubai into a disability-friendly city by 2020.
A consultant is expected to deliver the findings of a comprehensive study by the end of the year before pilot projects are launched in the first quarter of 2017.
