UAE-based Gulf Cobla has started land reclamation work for the expansion of Ibrahim Nasir international Airport in the Maldives.
Its unit Gulf Cobla Tennssor Maldives (GTCM) was appointed by main contractor Beijing Urban Construction Group (BUCG) to reclaim over 4 million cubic metres of sand for construction of a new runway on Hulhule island.
GTCM has already deployed its dredging vessel, Deira Bay to be followed by a second ship at a later date, it said in a statement.
As part of the deal, the company will also carry out revetment works protecting newly created land for the runway.
The deal represents repeat work for Jebel Ali-based Gulf Cobla, part of the Dutco Group of companies, which also carried out land reclamation for the previous expansion of the airport in 2012.
