Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed declared the official opening date for Louvre Abu Dhabi to be on November 11, 2017.
The date was revealed on his official Twitter account. In a series of tweets, Sheikh Mohamed said: “The UAE boosts its global cultural presence with the opening of Louvre Abu Dhabi on November 11. It serves as a cradle for art and culture.”
He also added: “Louvre Abu Dhabi reflects the UAE’s approach towards cultural connectivity and its pursuit to become a beacon of knowledge and tolerance.”
On Tuesday 7 March 2007, the Louvre in Paris announced that a new Louvre museum would be completed by 2012 in Abu Dhabi, with a revised estimate in early 2013 for a completion date of 2015. The opening has been repeatedly delayed, first to late 2016 and most recently to 2017. This is part of a thirty-year agreement between the city of Abu Dhabi and the French government. The museum is to be located on the Saadiyat Island Cultural District, and will be approximately 24,000 sqm in size.
