Dubai has taken another step towards construction of a 60,000 seat capacity stadium that will host football matches for the 2019 Asian Cup.
Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum reviewed a number of potential designs for the venue which will be built in Al Aweer area.
Sheikh Mohammed was briefed by Matar Al Tayer, Deputy Chairman of Dubai Sport Council, about the project, the world’s first fully air-conditioned and raised off the ground stadium.
Dar Al Handasah was selected as consultant and Perkins + Will as the main architect and design firm for the stadium project, Emirates News Agency (WAM) said.
Other facilities within the development include a training hall, 5,000 car park, a sports museum and conference halls.
In March 2015 the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) named the UAE as the host for the 24-nation football tournament, with matches expected to be played at a minimum of six venues across the country.
Dubai is also expected to host some matches at its 25,000 seat cricket stadium. Abu Dhabi has yet to reveal its stadium plans for 2019 but the capital is already home to two stadiums with capacities in excess of 40,000 spectators.
