Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council’s (UPC) announced the completion of the re-plan of Al Shamkha and Al Shawamekh on 21 March 2016. The project has been coordinated between the UPC, the Department of Municipal Affairs and Transport, Abu Dhabi Housing Authority (ADHA), and the Abu Dhabi General Services Company (Musanada).
Once completed, the project will provide residential areas for UAE nationals including schools, health facilities, commercial spaces, parks, entertainment facilities, pedestrian paths, lanes for cycling and mosques.
The master plans are crucial in meeting the housing needs of the growing population of the Abu Dhabi mainland.
Following completion of the tender process that is currently underway, infrastructure works in Al Shamkha and Al Shawamekh are due to commence in Q2 2016, which are anticipated to take 18 months to complete.
The Abu Dhabi City Municipality (ADM) will coordinate with Musanada who will be the project manager, while the ADHA are responsible for managing the development and distribution of residential plots, will oversee the residential plots within the areas.
Engineer Eisa Mubarak Al Mazroui, executive director of Municipal Infrastructure and Assets Sector at ADM, said that the internal roads and infrastructure project at Al Shawamekh, to be undertaken by the Municipality, would include the construction of roads and new infrastructure for residential plots including electrical works, water, sewage, telecommunication, rainwater drainage, lighting poles, pavements and other infrastructure components. The geographical span of the project covers Sectors 12 and 7, and the total length of roads planned for construction is about 27km.
