Rachael Jones, Head of Specialist Services KSA at JLL’s Project & Development Services team, reflects on staying motivated, overcoming challenges, and achieving growth in a male-dominated industry
As I reflect on my 25-year journey in the construction industry, I’m filled with a sense of pride and accomplishment. My path has been far from conventional, but it’s been a rewarding one that’s taught me valuable lessons about perseverance, self-belief, and the importance of seizing opportunities.
My journey into construction wasn’t a straight line. I started in property and asset management, but I consistently found myself drawn to the end of projects, particularly in handover and transition teams. This niche became my specialty, and I’ve come to realise its crucial importance. As I often say, “No one remembers how a project starts, but they do remember how it was handed over and what condition the property was in.” This perspective has shaped my approach to my work and fueled my passion for setting high standards that become lasting legacies.
In 2019, I joined JLL, just before the world was upended by the COVID-19 pandemic. This timing, while challenging, provided unique opportunities. I initially worked with the Property Asset Management (PAMS) team before transitioning to the Project & Deveopment Services team, where I successfully managed over 20 Taking Over Certifications (TOC) processes for our clients. These experiences have been invaluable in shaping my expertise and preparing me for my current role.
I’m currently the Head of Specialist Services in KSA, a position that I’m incredibly excited about. It’s a pivotal development in my career, allowing me to enhance my existing skills while exploring new business opportunities. As I continue to build and strenghten my team, I can’t stress enough how important it is to create a collaborative and positive working environment. After all, we spend a significant portion of our lives at work – it should be with people who make the days enjoyable and productive.
One of the aspects I appreciate most about working at JLL is the sense of trust and respect that permeates the organisation. There’s a genuine commitment to diversity and empowering women at all levels of the business. This culture of inclusivity and opportunity has been crucial in my professional growth and is something I strive to perpetuate in my own leadership.
Of course, my journey hasn’t been without its challenges. Balancing personal and professional life is an ongoing effort. In the past five years, I’ve witnessed numerous changes in Saudi Arabia, many accelerated by the events of 2020. Amidst these changes, I’ve moved twice, changed jobs twice, and even pursued an MSc in Construction Project Management – all while raising a young family.
I started my MSc when my daughter was just three months old. It’s been a journey of self-reflection, determination, and immense personal growth. There were times when it felt overwhelming, but I kept pushing forward. My family – my husband and children – have been my rock throughout this process. They are my primary source of motivation, keeping me grounded and inspired even on the toughest days.
To women considering a career in construction, I have one piece of advice: trust yourself and your abilities. You will go far if you believe in yourself. It’s something I wish I could tell my younger self. And remember, being assertive doesn’t mean you are ‘bossy’ – it means be a leader.
I’ve learned that where you start is not where you end up. Opportunities are there for the taking; you just need to want them enough and be willing to put in the work. This mindset has been crucial in my career progression and is something I try to instill in every team member I work with.
Outside of work, I’ve discovered a passion for photography. I took it up in 2016, initially as a pipe dream, but it turned out I had a natural talent for it. While I haven’t had as much time for it since moving to Saudi Arabia, I’m looking forward to picking it up again when the weather cools down in Riyadh.
As I look to the future, I’m excited about the challenges and growth opportunities that lie ahead. The construction industry is evolving, and with it comes the chance to make a lasting impact. I’m committed to continuing my professional development, mentoring others – especially women – in the industry, and contributing to projects that will shape the future of our built environment.
My journey in construction has been marked by determination, continuous learning, and a willingness to embrace new challenges. It hasn’t always been easy, but it has always been rewarding. To anyone considering a career in this field, especially women, I say: the construction industry needs your perspective, your skills, and your leadership. Trust in yourself, seize every opportunity for growth, and remember that with perseverance and hard work, you can achieve remarkable things. The future of construction is diverse, innovative, and full of potential – and you have a vital role to play in shaping it.
